Johannes Murer (1556-1641), son of the topographer, mathematician and woodcutter Jos Murer (1530-1580), was pastor in Wiesendangen in 1583, 1599 in Eglisau, 1612-1638 in Rickenbach and 1633 dean of the Winterthur chapter. He was involved in mathematics, cartography and the construction of sundials and produced maps of the Basel region and Thurgau. The age does not correspond with the year 1621, obviously the last digit was added incorrectly during a restoration. Since the painting shows Murer during work on the Thurgau map, which was completed in 1629, it is likely to have been painted at that time.
