Orpheus, inconsolable over the death of his Eurydice, descended into the underworld; charmed by his song, Pluto and Proserpina released her. But he violated the command to not look back at her before leaving Orcus, and so lost her again. (Ovid: Metamorphoses, X, 1-64) Oil sketch for a large painting, part of an extensive series of mythological representations for Philip IV's hunting lodge Torre de la Parada near Madrid, now in the Prado. Eurydice is modeled after the ancient sculpture of Venus Pudica.
