About the provenance
The painting by Franz Marc was acquired in 1953 from Galerie Otto Stangl in Munich. Following the artist’s death in 1916, it had passed to his widow Maria Marc, who also administered her late husband’s estate. Her ownership of the painting is documented until at least 1950, since she was still exhibiting it on loan in that year. From 1948 onwards, Maria Marc had appointed Otto Stangl to look after Franz Marc’s estate. However, neither the documents in the artist’s estate nor those in the estate of Otto Stangl in the Central Archive for German and International Art Market Studies (ZADIK) in Cologne indicate when and how the work passed from Maria Marc to Otto Stangl. In any event, its provenance between 1933 and 1945 has been clarified, meaning that it cannot have been confiscated as a result of Nazi persecution.
