Hans Thoma1839 Bernau im Schwarzwald – 1924 Karlsruhe

Thoma painted a first version of this composition in 1893 (Henry Thode: Thoma. Des Meisters Gemälde in 874 Abbildungen (Stuttgart/Leipzig 1909; = Klassiker der Kunst 15), p. 364).
The poetically free allegory is in the tradition of Moritz von Schwind and may have been inspired by his 'Mittag' (c. 1860; Munich, Schack-Galerie).In: Kunsthaus Zürich.
