Franca

Varlin met Franca Giovanoli from Bergell in 1951 in Zurich. Franca (born 14.III.1928) had spent her childhood in Pontremoli in Tuscany, where her father ran the Caffé Svizzero. On 27.IX.1963 Varlin married Franca. The present picture is the first portrait the artist painted of her, many followed. The couple now lived in Franca's parents' house in Bondo. Varlin, however, still maintained his studio at Neumarkt in Zurich. On 12.I.1966 their daughter Patrizia was born. Franca died on 10.IX.1998 in Zurich. Source
