On the right, Saint Nicholas of Bari throws three golden orbs into the bedroom of three poor virgins at night to save them from prostitution. The view of the saint, Stoecklin's namesake, into the sleeping chamber of the virgins finds a parallel in one of his major works, the 'Vorstellung' (1921; Kunstmuseum Winterthur).
