C – The provenance from 1933 to 1945 has not been conclusively clarified; gaps in the ownership history remain. According to current research, there is no evidence of Nazi-looted art. There are, however, implications of Nazi-looted art and / or conspicuous circumstances.

The Georges Braque painting was at the art dealership of the French-Jewish art dealer and collector Paul Rosenberg from no later than 1930 until at least May 1933. He lent the work out to Pittsburgh in autumn 1930 and Basel in April and May 1933. By November 1936 at the latest, it was in the possession of the Parisian collector Albert Bellanger. In 1954, via the French art dealer Martin Fabiani and the Jewish art historian Hans Oppenheimer, it moved to the Walter Feilchenfeldt art dealership in Zurich, which sold it to the Vereinigung Zürcher Kunstfreunde in April 1956. No concrete indications that the painting was confiscated as a result of Nazi persecution have been found, but Fabiani was involved in trading seized artworks during the occupation of France, which gives grounds for suspicion. As the research currently stands, it is not possible to state conclusively whether the work constitutes Nazi-looted art. At present, all the known sources have been exhausted.
