C – The provenance from 1933 to 1945 has not been conclusively clarified; gaps in the ownership history remain. According to current research, there is no evidence of Nazi-looted art. There are, however, implications of Nazi-looted art and / or conspicuous circumstances.

The painting was at the art dealership of the French-Jewish art dealer and collector Paul Rosenberg at least until May 1933. Three years later, it was verifiably owned by the Parisian collector Albert Bellanger. After that, all traces of the painting are lost. It was not until 1954 – two years before the Kunsthaus purchased it – that it is verified as being in the possession of the French art dealer Martin Fabiani. During the Nazi occupation of parts of France beginning in 1940, Fabiani was involved in the trade of confiscated artworks. It is therefore possible that the work is connected to Nazi art looting.
