Abendlandschaft bei Rossinière

Swiss painter Ferdinand Hodler created the painting ‘Evening Landscape near Rossinière’ in 1907. It depicts a plateau in the canton of Vaud, crossed by the Saane river. The mountains, painted in shades of blue and backlit, and the sky, depicted in dark yellow tones, evoke an early evening atmosphere. Hodler works with large areas of colour and clear forms. The colours are not true to life. The picture conveys a calm, solemn mood. The mountains radiate strength and permanence. Hodler is less concerned with precise details than with the mood and effect of nature. The Zurich Art Society acquired the painting directly from the artist at the end of 1907, making it one of its first purchases of Hodler's works. Source
