Macbeth, a Scottish general, is guided in all his actions by the cryptic prophecies of three witches: Through them he is tempted to murder the king in order to ascend to the throne himself. But guilt haunts him; a misleading prophecy leads to his downfall in battle against the king's avengers. The depiction condenses the appearance of the three witches as they appear in Shakespeare's Macbeth, I, 3, when Macbeth first encounters them with his companion Banquo. The death's-head hawkmoth in the background foreshadows the gloomy prophecies. One of several other versions is at Stratford-upon-Avon (Shakespeare Memorial Theatre). First engraved in 1785 by John Raphael Smith, see David H. Weinglass: Prints and engraved Illustrations by and after Henry Fuseli. A catalogue raisonné (Aldershot 1994) no. 73: 'The Weird Sisters'.
