In 1888 Hodler painted Hélène Weiglé, married Mme Bethmann-Weiglé, in the garden of his friend Marc Odier with a flower (Frankfurt, Städel; Ferdinand Hodler (exh. cat. Zurich/Berlin, Nationalgalerie/Paris, Musée du Petit Palais 1983), no. 27); the present picture was painted at the mother's request in the studio the following year, without the hint of early Art Nouveau typical of the period.
