Commissioned by the Accademia Carrara, Bergamo, for the centenary celebration of the birth of Gaetano Donizetti (1797-1848). The middle panel shows him composing at the grand piano; on the right the inspiring muses are listening; on the left the content of his dream is evoked in the lovers floating above a body of water in front of Bergamo Castle.
The unusual, quasi-etheric execution, with which Segantini wanted to capture the fleetingness of the dreamlike, resulted in the paint sinking into the canvas to a large extent, making the work difficult to read.
