The first large cardboard (Staatsgalerie Stuttgart) corresponds to the competition design and shows a central ensign covering the retreat as the main motif. In the present second cardboard, executed in Geneva from February to May 1897, this is replaced by the withdrawing troops carrying the wounded, a composition that is only refined and condensed in the following.In: Kunsthaus Zürich.
