Graff's entry in his calender on the 13.1.1793 probably refers to this portrait: 'Armfeld abgereist' [Armeld departed] (Winterthur, Stadtbibliothek). Countess Hedwig Ulrika von Armfeld, née Countess de La Gardie (1761-1832) was married to Gustav Mauritz Count von Armfeld (1757-1814) from 1785. The latter was a Swedish lieutenant general and minister, ambassador in Naples and Vienna, and from 1805 governor of Finland. In 1810 he advanced to general in Russian service. In 1812 he was raised to the rank of count. Posture, gaze and painterly treatment of the figures suggest that here the deceased daughter appears in her 'spirit body' to the mother and gives her comfort (cf. Freudweiler's 'Trostbilder', inv. 1945/0017).
