In this work and its counterpart 'The Punishment of Lust' (inv.1967/67), Segantini combines the pictorial ideas of two large paintings with the same titles (1891 and 1894 respectively; Liverpool and Vienna) to form a diptych; executed in a sgraffito-like technique in almost monochrome, they transfer the daylight scenes into a high-alpine snowy landscape in the moonlight.
The starting point was the pseudo-Buddhist poem 'Nirvana' by Luigi Illica, based on visions of the Benedictine Alberico di Settefrati (12th century). In order to illustrate the course of the development, Segantini changed the arrangement of the figures and their tendency to move in relation to the large versions. The 'lustful' are atoned for their hedonistic pleasure of love, with which they deny their fertility; the 'evil mothers' are met by the rejected children growing out of the tree, who, sucking their mother's breast, herald redemption from punishment.In: Kunsthaus Zürich.
