We have 1824 paintings online.
Neoclassically educated, Füssli contrasted the antique beauty of conventional art with a never-before-seen work of human passions. An eminently important role in his work was played by the imagination, which depicted what was hidden deep in the soul. In this painting, the Londoner-by-choice known as 'wild Swiss' heroizes evil: a powerful Satan calls upon his infernal companions to fight against the good God. The motif is based on John Milton's verse epic Paradise Lost.
