We have 1824 paintings online.
The fairy king Oberon drizzles the juice of a flower into the eyes of his estranged wife Titania so that she will fall in love with the first creature she encounters upon awaking (Shakespeare, A Midsummer Night's Dream, II, 2). This will be the weaver Bottom, on whom Puck has put a donkey's head out of mischief (Scene III, 1; cf. inv. 2543). Painted as the first painting for Woodmason's 'Shakespeare Gallery', in which various artists presented paintings of scenes from Shakespeare that were distributed through graphic reproductions. Fuseli's painting was engraved by Richard Rhodes in 1794, see David H. Weinglass: Prints and engraved Illustrations by and after Henry Fuseli. A catalogue raisonné (Aldershot 1994) no. 132.
