Ulrich Wille (1848-1925) was a general in the Swiss army during the First World War. The portrait was commissioned by Willy Russ-Young as a gift to the sitter together with a second version, which ended up in the Musée d'art et d'histoire in Geneva with the Russ-Young collection. The meetings took place from the end of February 1915 at the Hotel Bellevue in Bern; August Heer modelled a bust at the same time. The painting remained with Wille after the last meeting at the beginning of May.
