Suffering from pulmonary edema, Hodler could only sleep half seated. As soon as the first light appeared over the lake and behind the Môle and the Mont Blanc mountain range, he painted the colours of the sunrise from the window of his apartment on the Quai du Mont-Blanc. Hodler called these last paintings 'paysages flamboyants'.
