The poet Ewald Christian von Kleist (Zeblin/Pomerania 1715–Frankfurt a. O. 1759) travelled to Switzerland in 1752/53 as a Prussian promotion officer and visited Johann Jakob Bodmer. Presumably a preparatory work for the fully executed portrait (privately owned, Zurich; Yvonne Boerlin-Brodbeck: Johann Caspar Füssli und sein Briefwechsel mit Jean-Georges Wille (Zurich 1978; = Beiträge zur Kunst des 17. und 18. Jahrhunderts in Zürich), no. 9), which in turn was used in the Allegorie inv. 1898.
