After Hugo, the founder of the first Carthusian monastery, was called to Rome by Pope Urban, the monks wanted to follow him. Then the Madonna and Peter appeared to Prior Landuin and a companion and urged them to remain in their monastery, the Grande Chartreuse near Grenoble. The stylistic attribution to Francesco Fracanzano of the painting formerly attributed to Massimo Stanzione and Ribera cannot be considered certain.
