The painting was previously considered to be the work of Jan Davidsz de Heem, to whom it comes surprisingly close in quality. Fred G. Meijer, who is preparing a catalog of de Heem's work, recognized the hand of Cornelis from his early days in his father's workshop. In fact, the initials of the first name in the signature have been changed subsequently.
