We have 1824 paintings online.
In 1882 Hodler stayed for six months with relatives in Langenthal and created the present draft composition for the first version of the depiction of the fable by Jean de La Fontaine, which was given as the theme for the Concours Diday 1882. Hodler won first prize for the large version (the so-called Langenthal version, lost). In 1886/87 he took up the composition again in a smaller painting (Schaffhausen, Museum zu Allerheiligen) and a monumental version (Geneva).
