Oskar Kokoschka1886 Pöchlarn – 1980 Montreux

Kokoschka painted the picture in the spring or summer of 1917 in the Gasthof Felsenburg on the 'Weisse Hirsch' near Dresden, where he lived with a small group of pacifists after his stay in a sanatorium from 1916 to 1919. The two sitters - the actress Käthe Richter and the expressionist dramatist Walter Hasenclever (1890-1940) - were among them, as were the actor Ernst Deutsch and the poet Ivar von Lücken.
