Ferdinand Hodler1853 Bern – 1918 Genf
We have 150 artworks by Ferdinand Hodler online.
We have 1824 paintings online.
Although Hodler was given the most important commission for the artistic design of the Kunsthaus at an early stage, it was not until 1910 that the commission was placed. The complex genesis of the composition is linked to the mural 'Floraison' for the assembly hall of the University of Zurich, which was ordered in 1913 but never realized. In 1914/15 the first large version (446 x 895 cm; Kunstmuseum Basel) is created, which is considered too large when placed in the Kunsthaus in January 1916. Hodler painted a version reduced by 90 cm in height and 180 cm in width. As preliminary work and in parallel he painted three further versions (258 x 475 cm, Kunstmuseum Solothurn; 134 x 268 cm, Steiner Collection; 138 x 245 cm, Kunstmuseum Winterthur).
