For the exterior pillars of the "Palais des Beaux-Arts" at the National Exhibition in Geneva in 1896, on which originally one female and one male figure were to represent each of the 22 cantons, Hodler created 26 vertical-format panneaux, 13 halberdiers, seven warriors of historical character, five craftsmen and one shepherd from July to December 1895, for which he found the models mainly in the Bernese Oberland and in German-speaking Switzerland (see Jura Brüschweiler: Ferdinand Hodler (exh. cat. Martigny 1991), pp. 164-195 and inv. 818, inv. 819, inv. 820, inv. 1153, inv. 1154).
