Counterpart to the unfinished portrait of Henriette Feuerbach, the painter's stepmother, in the Nationalgalerie Berlin (Jürgen Ecker: Anselm Feuerbach. Life and Work. Critical Catalogue of Paintings, Oil Sketches and Oil Studies (Munich 1991), no. 513).
The 's. i.' in the title is an abbreviation for 'se ipsum' (English: himself).
