To the mourning Achilles, his fallen friend appears in a dream and asks him to bury his corpse. 'Thus then having spoken, he stretched out with his friendly arms, nor caught him; for the spirit went gibbering beneath the earth, like smoke' (Homer, Iliad, XXIII). Created as an illustration commissioned by Du Roveray, see inv. 2561. Engraving by James Heath from 1806 (cf. David H. Weinglass: Prints and engraved Illustrations by and after Henry Fuseli.
