Two old judges ambush Susanna, the beautiful wife of Jehoiakim, while she is bathing and want to blackmail her into sexual relations, threatening to accuse her of adultery with a young man if she does not. Susanna resists and is brought up on false charges by the two old men and sentenced to death. She is saved by Daniel, who cross-examines her to prove that the two old men are lying (Daniel, XIII). Rebekah and Susanna are among those heroines who are considered typological prefigurations of Mary's virtues. As in the counterpart (inv. 868), the apocryphal history also gives rise here to genre-like-painterly decorative motifs in exciting chiaroscuro.
