Paulus Usteri (1768-1831) was a physician, statesman and journalist. Under the impression of the French Revolution, he turned to politics and became a spokesman for Zurich liberalism. During the Helvetic and Regeneration periods, he embodied the spirit of the new age. He was a major campaigner for freedom of the press and acted as a mediator between town and country. In contrast to the patriots devoted to France, he advocated the realisation of his ideals as independently as possible from abroad. He died shortly after his election as mayor of Zurich.
