Henry Fuseli1741 Zürich – 1825 Putney Hill/London
We have 115 artworks by Henry Fuseli online.
We have 1710 paintings online.
The figure served as a frontispiece to Fuseli's 'Lectures on Painting, delivered at the Royal Academy', London 1801, cf. David H. Weinglass: Prints and engraved Illustrations by and after Henry Fuseli. A catalogue raisonné (Aldershot 1994), no. 161. The motif of the figure encapsulated within itself is one of Fuseli's most striking inventions, inspired by Blake (cf. Gert Schiff: Johann Heinrich Fuseli 1741-1825, 2 vols. (Zurich et al. 1973; = Oeuvrekataloge Schweizer Künstler 1), vol. I, pp. 217, 288 f.). Possibly a fragment of 'Melancholia', painting no. 46 for the Milton Gallery (cf. Christoph Becker: Johann Heinrich Füssli. Das verlorene Paradies (exh. cat. Stuttgart 1997), p. 70), which is preserved only in a vignette, cf. David H. Weinglass: Prints and engraved Illustrations by and after Henry Fuseli. A catalogue raisonné (Aldershot 1994), no. 184.
