A fleeting metropolitan episode at dawn: fashionably elegant revellers, two gentlemen and a lady, practice charity and have a soup cook serve a meagre meal to poor market workers. The legendary central 'Halles', the market halls for victuals in Paris, were built by Victor Baltard from 1852 and demolished from 1971.
