Around 1917 Gubler painted several landscapes called 'Burghölzli' (Frauenfelder/Hess/Mannhart 1997, nos. 21-26); in this one, the Cubist-influenced style is most pronounced. Although similar, the group of houses is always designed differently; obviously no topographical accuracy was intended. The 'Burghölzli' [translator's note: Psychiatric University Hospital Zurich] is the psychiatric clinic of the Canton of Zurich where Max Gubler lived from 1969 until his death.
