For the front wall of the meeting hall of the Städtische Kollegien of the monumental Hanover City Hall, the citizens' Reformation oath was to be depicted, to which the 'wordholder' Dirck Arnsborg called on the market square against the Catholic council on 26 June 1533. Through the mediation of Max Liebermann, the city director Heinrich Tramm approached Hodler on 23 January 1911, who accepted the commission and delivered the 474 x 1512 cm painting at the end of May 1913. Hector Hodler was the model for the central figure, which Hodler called the 'Speaker' and also executed individually in large (National Gallery Berlin).
