Fridolin Stähelin was the artists' alpine dairyman and innkeeper on Richisau, where Koller stayed with Traugott Schiess and Gustav Ott in the late summer of 1858 (Adolf Frey: Rudolf Koller (Zurich 1928; 1st ed. 1906), pp. 56 f.). At the same time, a portrait in half figure was also created (Marcel Fischer: Rudolf Koller, 1828-1905, Zurich 1951, fig. 97). Used two decades later in the 'Alpaufzug' described by Gottfried Keller in his 'Bescheidenen Kunstreischen' (1882; St. Petersburg, Ermitage; 1st version 1881, auction Kornfeld, Bern 21.VI.1996, lot 65).
