The clear, uncluttered overall arrangement, the exactness of the architectural drawing and the calmly resting water point to the period in which Guardi was developing his own style by referring back to Canaletto. In a repetition Guardi treated the same view more richly in painting (see Christie's catalogue, London 8.VIII.1983, lot 9).
