After returning from Vienna, where he celebrated a great triumph at the Secession, Hodler stayed in Leissigen on Lake Thun from 20 July to 16 August. The painting is obviously an exploration of the landscapes of Gustav Klimt, with whom he had much interaction in Vienna.
