B – The provenance from 1933 to 1945 has not been unambiguously clarified; gaps in the ownership history remain. According to current research, there is no evidence of Nazi-looted art. There are no implications of Nazi-looted art and / or conspicuous circumstances.

This work by Abraham van Beyeren comes from the collection of the Nobel Prize winner and art collector Leopold Ruzicka, from which it was donated to the Kunsthaus Zürich in 2005. Collection documents confirm that Ruzicka acquired the painting in 1949 from C. Marshall Spink, the owner of an art dealership based in London. The family company Spink and Son was founded in the 17th century and is one of the oldest antiques businesses still in existence anywhere in the world. It has not yet been possible to establish when and from whom Spink purchased the painting, whether it was part of his private collection or was sold on commission by the art dealership. Correspondence merely suggests that it came from the collection of the English poet Lord Byron. Despite gaps in its provenance, there is currently no suspicion that the work constitutes cultural property confiscated as a result of Nazi persecution, since there is no context of persecution for the individuals involved.
