At the beginning of the 1860s, Jongkind spent several consecutive summers in Normandy, preferably in Honfleur (see Johan Barthold Jongkind. A Pioneer of Impressionism, exhib. cat. The Hague/Cologne/Paris 2003/04, pp. 111-145; text by Sylvie Patin).
The painter repeatedly took on this subject; an etching by Jongkind from 1867 is also known (copy in Paris, Bibliothèque Nationale de France).
