In 1908 Hodler met Valentine Godé-Darel (Paris 1873 - Vevey January 25, 1915), an elegant and educated divorced lady who lived with her mother in Geneva. She served as a model, especially for 'Linienherrlichkeit' and 'Fröhliches Weib' (Inv. 1964/0034). An intense love affair developed, from which daughter Paulette was born in 1913; due to Valentine's illness with cancer, the relationship took a tragic course, which Hodler recorded in numerous drawings and paintings. (Cf. 'Genfersee bei Sonnenuntergang', 1914, inv. 1157).
