Zwingli believed only in the Bible and not in traditional stories of salvation – where ‘good and evil, falsehood and fiction are mixed together like nonsense.’ The Bible, for example, makes no mention of the Three Kings depicted on the left. It only mentions an unspecified number of wise men from the East who came to the manger. It was only later legends of saints that told of three kings. This gave rise to a motif that is still an integral part of Reformed Christmas cribs today. Inside painting of the left altar wing, see inv. 1952.
