'Schweizersbild' is the name of a large rock near Thayngen in the canton of Schaffhausen, in whose 'Kesslerloch' important prehistoric finds were made. A smaller version (Schaffhausen, Museum zu Allerheiligen) shows a sketchy group of people at the front; this was a preparatory work for a school mural that was not realised. A third painting developed from the motif is called 'Die Wolfsschlucht' or 'Tal des Vergessens' (Ernst Georg Rüegg. 1883-1948 (exh. cat. Zurich, Helmhaus, 1984), figs. 47 and 39).
