Johannes der Täufer in der Wüste (Aussenseite)

c. 1500

We have 2 artworks by The Younger Bernese Carnation Master [Nelkenmeister] online.
We have 1824 paintings online.
Lower panel of the right wing of an altar with scenes from the life of John the Baptist; of the upper one, only the inner side with the 'Tanz der Salome' (Budapest, Szépmüvészeti Museum) remains. The left wing is in the Kunstmuseum in Bern. The same master, influenced by Bartholomew Zeitblom from Ulm, painted frescoes in the Dominican Church in Bern (dated 1495); that the altar of St. John also originates from there, remains an assumption. Before John began to preach and baptize, he meditated in the desert (Luke, III, 2). John publicly denounced the crimes and adultery of King Herod, whereupon he was imprisoned and beheaded at the request of Salome.
