An old man brings his adulterous young wife, who according to Jewish law should be stoned to death, with her lover before Christ; but the latter writes in the sand: 'Let him who is without sin cast the first stone' (John, VIII, 7). When the young Preti painted the scene, he was still under the impression of Caravaggio, but in the subtlety of the psychological description, the study of Domenichino and other Bolognese masters is already showing through.
