Arnold Böcklin1827 Basel – 1901 San Domenico bei Fiesole
We have 18 artworks by Arnold Böcklin online.
We have 1824 paintings online.
According to Landsinger's inscription on the verso, Böcklin gave it to the Russian glass painter Vladimir Swertschkoff, who was working in Florence, had his studio in the same house and gave him a fictitious commission for the design of a glass painting. This was the basis for 'Flora, Scattering Flowers' (1875; Essen, Museum Folkwang), which Böcklin developed further into 'Flora, Awakening Flowers' (c. 1876; Wuppertal, Von der Heydt Museum). The present study is probably a preparatory work for this painting; the fact that the left arm is raised more, corresponds to a normal-sized harp as indicated by the cloth, while in the executed version the instrument has been reduced in size.
