Marguerite (‘Margot’) was the daughter of Henri Matisse and Camille Joblaud, who in the early 1890s worked as a model for Matisse and was also his partner. After their separation, Margot was raised by the artist and his later family, and can be seen in many of Matisse’s works. Here he portrayed her in the Fauvist style, on which he had a formative influence and which is characterised by casual brushwork and a colour palette that deviates from the natural base hues. The painting once belonged to the important collection of the siblings Leo and Gertrude Stein.
