Although the work is also known as 'Vitrail', it is by no means a stained glass design; rather, Redon here transposes the suggestive power inherent in a stained glass painting into the medium of pastel. The figure of Beatrice, the idealized lover, who in Dante's 'Divina Commedia' guides the poet through paradise, appears more frequently in Redon's work, for example also in 1897 in a colour lithograph for the 'Album des Peintres-Graveurs' published by Ambroise Vollard.
