In the 'Liber veritatis', the list of his works kept by Claude Lorrain, recorded as no. 115, the famous composition was for a long time known only in the repetition painted in 1651 for the Zurich Feldzeugmeister (General of the Artillery), fortress architect and collector Johann Georg Werdmüller with a different staffage (collection of the Duke of Westminster). Two drawings with the group of artist and hunter and with the free composition of the triumphal arch of Emperor Constantine (315 AD) and the Colosseum (72-80 AD) prepared the programmatic evocation of the greatness and transience of ancient Rome (London, British Museum, and Edinburgh, National Gallery of Scotland).
