In 1908, at the age of 68, Monet traveled to Venice for the first and only time. In six compositionally very similar paintings (Daniel Wildenstein: Monet. Catalogue raisonné. 4 vols. (Cologne 1996), vol. IV, nos. 1751-1756), he approached the view of the Palazzo Ducale, the Campanile, which was being rebuilt after the collapse of 1902, and the Riva degli Schiavoni from the island of San Giorgio Maggiore. The painter completed these paintings in Giverny.
