A. R. Penck1939 Dresden – 2017 Zürich

This is the first important painting in which Penck uses elementary signs to represent general conditions, as is characteristic of his further work.
In the manner of a diagram, Penck shows his view at the time of the relations between West and East and especially between the FRG and the GDR under the conditions of the Cold War.
A drawing in the Kupferstichkabinett Basel leads to 'Weltbild II' (1965; Cologne, Museum Ludwig), in which Penck further develops the theme.In: Kunsthaus Zürich.
