Richisau is located in the Klöntal valley in the Glarus region on the Pragelpass, which was already visited by Zurich artists in the 18th century. In 1857 Koller stayed there with Johann Georg Steffan, the Munich animal painter Friedrich Voltz, Gustav Ott and Traugott Schiess. The large, picturesque maple trees were a main attraction; Koller reached the peak of his unusually fresh, large-format and colourful nature studies there.
